The Merchant of Venice — Act 4, Scene 1: Venice. A court of justice.

In the Venetian court, the Duke urges Shylock to show mercy to Antonio, but Shylock refuses and insists on the bond. Antonio accepts his fate, and Bassanio offers money and even his own life to save him. A messenger from Bellario arrives with a letter and Nerissa, disguised as a lawyer’s clerk, and soon Portia appears in disguise as the learned doctor Balthasar. Portia first pleads for mercy, then examines the bond and turns the law against Shylock by ruling that he may take flesh but not blood. When she also cites the law against him as an alien who threatened a citizen, Shylock is stripped of his case and forced to yield.
