The Merry Wives of Windsor — Act 4, Scene 5: A room in the Garter Inn.

At the Garter Inn, the Host brings Simple to Falstaff and makes him wait while Falstaff explains that the “wise woman” Simple seeks was really there with him. Simple asks about the chain that Nym took from Slender and also mentions Slender’s hopes for Anne Page; Falstaff answers that Anne will be his fortune. Bardolph then returns in distress and reports that the German horse-borrowers have fled after throwing him into a ditch. Sir Hugh Evans and Doctor Caius each arrive separately to warn the Host that he has been tricked about the supposed duke. The Host panics, and Falstaff complains of being fooled and beaten. Mistress Quickly then enters with another message and a letter for Falstaff.
