The Third part of King Henry the Sixth — Act 1, Scene 3: Field of battle betwixt Sandal Castle and Wakefield.

On the battlefield near Sandal Castle, Rutland, York’s young son, runs in fear with his tutor as Clifford and soldiers arrive. Clifford dismisses the tutor and orders him away, declaring that Rutland must die in revenge for his father’s death. The tutor pleads for the child’s life but is dragged off. Clifford confronts the terrified Rutland, who begs for mercy, offers to suffer imprisonment instead, and points out that he has done Clifford no harm. Clifford refuses to listen, says York’s family must all be destroyed, and stabs Rutland to death. Clifford then leaves, carrying his vengeance into the bloodshed.
