The Tragedy of Coriolanus — Act 4, Scene 1: Rome. Before a gate of the city.

Coriolanus takes a final, emotional leave of Volumnia, Virgilia, Menenius, Cominius, and the young noblemen at the city gate after his banishment. He tries to steady his mother and wife, telling them not to grieve and reminding Volumnia of the hard lessons she once taught him about courage and endurance. Virgilia and Volumnia cannot hide their sorrow, but Coriolanus insists he will make his way in the world and that they should not expect him to seem changed. Cominius offers to travel with him for a time, but Coriolanus refuses and asks only to be shown out. The group parts with tears and affection, and Menenius laments that he cannot go with him.
