The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark — Act 4, Scene 7: Another room in the castle.

Claudius speaks privately with Laertes, explaining that he did not openly punish Hamlet because Gertrude is devoted to her son and the public loves him too much. When a messenger brings letters from Hamlet, Claudius reads that Hamlet has returned to Denmark and asks to see the king. Laertes, still grieving for his father and sister, is eager for revenge, and Claudius turns that anger toward a plan to kill Hamlet without blame. He arranges a fencing match and suggests a poisoned blade and backup poison in a drink. Gertrude then enters with news that Ophelia has drowned, and Laertes rushes out in grief as Claudius follows.
