The Tragedy of Macbeth — Act 1, Scene 5: Inverness. Macbeth's castle.

At Inverness, Lady Macbeth reads Macbeth’s letter telling her about the witches’ prophecy and his new title of Thane of Cawdor. She immediately believes the witches have spoken with real power, but she worries that Macbeth is too kind and hesitant to seize the crown by violence. A messenger then brings news that King Duncan will arrive at the castle that night. Lady Macbeth takes this as the perfect moment and calls on dark spirits to harden her and strip away remorse. When Macbeth enters, she tells him to hide his true feelings and act welcoming while she handles the dangerous work needed that night.
