The Tragedy of Macbeth — Act 4, Scene 1: A cavern. In the middle, a boiling cauldron.

Thunder leads the three witches back to their cavern, where they stir a boiling cauldron with grotesque ingredients and chant over their spell. Hecate appears, praises their work, and helps direct the magic before leaving. The witches then sense Macbeth’s arrival and admit him. He demands answers and forces them to show him what they know. In turn, they reveal an armed head warning him to beware Macduff, a bloody child telling him no man born of woman will harm him, and a crowned child saying he will not be defeated until Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane. Macbeth also sees a vision of Banquo’s descendants as kings, which horrifies him.
