The Tragedy of Macbeth — Act 4, Scene 2: Fife. Macduff's castle.

At Macduff’s castle in Fife, Lady Macduff speaks with Ross about her husband’s flight to England and angrily calls it cowardly and unnatural, saying Macduff has left his wife and children unprotected. Ross tries to defend Macduff and then leaves, warning that the times are dangerous. Lady Macduff then teases her young son about his father being dead, and the boy answers with quick, playful wit. A messenger arrives and urges her to flee because danger is near, but before she can escape, murderers enter asking for Macduff. When she defies them, they stab her son, and Lady Macduff runs off crying for help.
