Timon of Athens — Act 1, Scene 1: Athens. A hall in Timon's house.

In Timon’s hall, a Poet, Painter, Jeweller, and Merchant wait among other guests and praise Lord Timon before he appears, each hoping for favor. They admire Timon’s generosity and discuss the gifts they have brought, while the Poet and Painter privately reflect on how fortune raises and abandons people. Timon enters and immediately pays Ventidius’s debt, then hears an old Athenian complain that Lucilius loves his daughter. Timon approves the match and promises support. He accepts the Painter’s work and examines the Jeweller’s gift. When Apemantus arrives, he insults everyone, mocking Timon’s hospitality, before Alcibiades is welcomed and all go in to dinner.
