Timon of Athens — Act 5, Scene 1: The woods. Before Timon's cave.

Near Timon’s cave, a Poet and Painter arrive hoping to profit from rumors that Timon still has gold and has been testing his friends. They flatter him and offer only promises, but Timon sees through their hypocrisy, calls them false, and drives them away with a handful of gold. Flavius then brings two senators, who ask Timon to return to Athens and help defend the city against Alcibiades. Timon refuses, cursing the senators and offering only bitter warnings and insults. He says Athens deserves its troubles, tells them to carry his message back, and retreats into his cave. The senators leave, seeing that Timon cannot be persuaded.
