Twelfth Night — Act 1, Scene 5: OLIVIA'S house.

Maria scolds Feste for staying away too long, but he jokes his way past her and makes witty remarks about hanging, marriage, and fooling. Olivia enters with Malvolio and tries to dismiss the clown, yet Feste argues with her and turns her grief for her brother into a verbal test of wit. He also teases Malvolio, who criticizes fools and Olivia’s tolerance of him. Maria then announces that a young gentleman is waiting at the gate. Olivia has Malvolio send him away at first, but when she learns he is persistent and learns what he looks like, she changes her mind and agrees to receive Orsino’s messenger, Cesario.
