Twelfth Night — Act 2, Scene 2: A street.

Malvolio follows Viola and returns a ring from Olivia, saying Olivia wants no more messages from Duke Orsino and does not want Viola to come again on Orsino’s business. Viola insists she left no ring with Olivia, but Malvolio leaves it behind and departs. Alone, Viola wonders what Olivia means and realizes the countess may have mistaken her disguise for real affection. She reflects that her appearance as Cesario has stirred Olivia’s feelings, even though Orsino loves Olivia and Viola herself loves Orsino. Caught between these mistaken desires, Viola sees her situation as impossible and hopes time will sort it out.
