Two Gentlemen of Verona — Act 1, Scene 1: Verona. An open place.

In Verona’s open place, Valentine tells Proteus he is leaving for Milan and urges him not to waste his youth staying home in love with Julia. Proteus admits he will miss Valentine but remains devoted to Julia, while Valentine mocks the troubles of being in love. The two exchange affectionate farewells, and after Valentine exits, Proteus reveals that Julia has changed him and distracted him from his studies. Speed then arrives looking for Valentine and confirms he has already gone. Proteus questions Speed about delivering a letter to Julia, but Speed teases him, reports that Julia gave no encouraging response, and says she seemed cold.
