Two Gentlemen of Verona — Act 1, Scene 2: The same. Garden of JULIA's house.

In the garden of Julia’s house, Julia asks Lucetta whether she should fall in love and names several gentlemen for comparison. Lucetta dismisses Sir Eglamour and Mercatio, but speaks strongly in favor of Proteus, saying he loves Julia best. When Lucetta presents a letter from Proteus, Julia first scolds her for bringing it, then sends her away in embarrassment. Left alone, Julia admits she wants to read the letter and regrets her harshness. Lucetta returns, and the two trade playful teasing about the hidden message. Julia becomes more openly affected by the letter, tears it in anger, then kisses and preserves the pieces as her feelings soften. Dinner is called, and they leave together.
