Two Gentlemen of Verona — Act 2, Scene 5: The same. A street.

Speed meets Launce in Milan and greets him as if he were welcome, but Launce jokes that a man is not truly welcome until he has paid for his drink. Speed agrees to take him to the alehouse and asks about Proteus’s farewell to Julia. Launce says they parted “fairly in jest,” and his odd answers make Speed struggle to understand whether the pair will marry. Launce refuses to explain directly and keeps turning everything into wordplay about his staff and his dog, Crab. Speed then asks if Valentine has become a serious lover, and Launce mocks the question before inviting Speed to the alehouse with him.
