Two Gentlemen of Verona — Act 2, Scene 4: Milan. The DUKE's palace.

At the Duke’s palace in Milan, Silvia meets Valentine while Thurio watches jealously and Speed mocks the tension. Valentine and Thurio trade sharp insults until the Duke enters and asks about Valentine’s home and family. Valentine warmly praises Proteus, and the Duke sends for him. When Proteus arrives, Valentine asks Silvia to welcome his friend, and Silvia treats Proteus politely before leaving with Thurio. Left together, Valentine explains that he is deeply in love with Silvia and is preparing a secret marriage. He asks Proteus for help, but after Valentine exits, Proteus is immediately struck by Silvia’s beauty and begins to compare her with Julia.
