Two Gentlemen of Verona — Act 2, Scene 6: The same. The DUKE'S palace.

Proteus enters alone and wrestles with his divided loyalties. He admits that he has sworn himself to Julia, then fallen in love with Silvia and betrayed his friend Valentine by wanting her too. He tries to excuse his broken vows by claiming that love has changed and improved his judgment, but he also recognizes the shame of what he is saying. Choosing his own desire over friendship and constancy, he decides to forget Julia, treat Valentine as an enemy, and give Silvia’s father news of Valentine’s plan to climb to her window that night. He intends to use this betrayal to clear the way for himself.
