Two Gentlemen of Verona — Act 3, Scene 1: Milan. The DUKE's palace.

At the Duke’s palace, Proteus privately tells the Duke that Valentine plans to steal Silvia away that night using a rope ladder, and he asks the Duke to stop him without revealing that Proteus is the source. The Duke pretends to value the warning and waits for Valentine. When Valentine arrives, the Duke questions him about his business, guides him into explaining the ladder plan, and then discovers a letter proving Valentine’s intention to meet Silvia. Furious, he banishes Valentine at once. Valentine is left in despair, while Launce and Speed end the scene in comic confusion over a letter and a country woman Launce describes.
