The Winter's Tale — Act 4, Scene 1: Time, the Chorus.

Time appears as the Chorus and explains that he controls both joy and sorrow and can move the story across long stretches instantly. He asks the audience not to blame him for jumping ahead sixteen years, saying he can overturn custom and make the present seem old. He then tells the audience to imagine that Leontes has shut himself away, overwhelmed by guilt and grief after his jealous actions. Time directs attention to Bohemia, where he names Polixenes’ son Florizel and introduces Perdita as a shepherd’s daughter who has grown up in beauty and grace. He refuses to reveal what happens next.
