Antony and Cleopatra — Act 4, Scene 14: The same. Another room.

Antony, alone with Eros, reflects on how his fortunes have dissolved and blames Cleopatra’s betrayal for his ruin. Mardian arrives to report that Cleopatra is not false but dead, and Antony is overcome with grief. He orders Eros to arm him, then asks him to kill him as he has sworn to do if the moment came. Eros cannot bring himself to strike Antony, so he kills himself instead. Antony praises Eros’ nobility, then stabs himself, but not fatally. Soldiers enter, refuse to kill him, and leave. Diomed arrives from Cleopatra and reveals that she only pretended to die. Antony calls for his guard and has himself carried to Cleopatra’s monument.
