Cymbeline — Act 1, Scene 6: The same. Another room in the palace.

Imogen enters alone, lamenting her father’s cruelty, the Queen’s falsehood, and Posthumus’s banishment. Pisanio soon brings in Iachimo, a Roman gentleman carrying letters from Posthumus. Imogen reads Posthumus’s affectionate message and warmly welcomes the visitor. Iachimo then begins praising her beauty and, with careful flattery, turns the talk toward Posthumus, claiming he is carefree in Rome. He gradually shifts to implying that Posthumus has been unfaithful, and Imogen is shocked and distressed. After she angrily rebukes him for insulting her husband, Iachimo quickly changes tone, apologizes, and praises both Imogen and Posthumus. He then asks her to keep a trunk of presents safe overnight, and she agrees.
