Measure for Measure — Act 2, Scene 4: A room in ANGELO's house.

Angelo is alone in his house, troubled because his thoughts keep turning from prayer to Isabella, and he admits that desire is overpowering his strict public image. When a servant announces Isabella, he receives her and tells her bluntly that Claudio must die. Isabella pleads for mercy and argues that using the law so harshly is wrong, but Angelo tests her by asking whether she would give up her body to save her brother. When she refuses, he reveals his real demand: she must yield to him if she wants Claudio spared. Isabella condemns him, leaves in horror, and decides to tell Claudio and prepare him for death.
