The Life and Death of Richard the Third — Act 2, Scene 1: London. The palace.

In the palace, the sick King Edward tries to end the quarrels among his court by forcing Rivers, Hastings, Queen Elizabeth, Dorset, and Buckingham to reconcile and swear friendship. Gloucester arrives and pretends complete goodwill toward everyone, especially the queen’s family and Hastings. Elizabeth then asks Edward to restore Clarence, and Gloucester shockingly announces that Clarence is dead, leaving everyone stunned. When Derby enters to ask pardon for a servant who killed a man, Edward turns furious and grief-stricken over Clarence’s death, blaming himself and the court for not defending his brother. He withdraws to his closet with Hastings, while Gloucester and Buckingham watch the king’s distress.
