The Third part of King Henry the Sixth — Act 2, Scene 5: Another part of the field.

King Henry sits alone on the battlefield and reflects on the fight as a confused struggle in which neither side clearly wins. He longs for the peaceful life of a shepherd, free from the fear and treachery that burden a king. A young soldier enters carrying the body of a man he has killed, only to discover he has slain his own father, who had fought on the opposite side. Henry pities him, and then a father appears with the body of his dead son, struck down in the same civil war. Soon Queen Margaret, Prince Edward, and Exeter arrive in flight, warning Henry that Warwick and the enemy are pressing close, and they all hurry away together.
