Titus Andronicus — Act 2, Scene 4: Another part of the forest.

Demetrius and Chiron bring in Lavinia after the attack, mocking her because she cannot speak or use her hands to identify them. They leave her helpless and go off. Marcus Andronicus then finds Lavinia and is horrified by what has been done to her. He tries to understand her condition, recognizing that she has been mutilated in a way that prevents her from telling what happened. He compares her to Philomela, the mythic woman who was also silenced after rape, and grieves over her injuries. Seeing that Lavinia cannot speak for herself, Marcus decides to take her to Titus so her father can see the terrible crime.
