Sir Andrew tries to back out of staying longer, saying he has seen Olivia show more kindness to Cesario than to him, which makes him think she prefers the young messenger. Fabian and Sir Toby push him to explain himself, and Fabian flatters the idea that Olivia’s behavior was meant to spur Sir Andrew into action. Sir Toby decides Sir Andrew should answer with a challenge to Cesario and tells him to write a rude, brief duel letter. After Sir Andrew leaves to do it, Maria arrives and reports that Malvolio has obeyed her forged letter and is now absurdly dressed in yellow stockings and cross-garters, smiling foolishly. Sir Toby, Fabian, and Maria go off to look at him.
