Two Gentlemen of Verona — Act 4, Scene 1: The frontiers of Mantua. A forest.

In a forest on the frontier of Mantua, a band of outlaws stops Valentine and Speed on the road and threatens to rob them. Speed is frightened, but Valentine calmly explains that he has little of value because banishment has already stripped him of everything. The outlaws question him about where he comes from, why he was banished, and whether he has useful learning, and they are impressed by his gentlemanly manner and skill with language. They reveal that several of them are also banished gentlemen and offer to make Valentine their leader. Valentine accepts, as long as they do not abuse women or helpless travelers, and the outlaws welcome him into their company.
